Question

What do you use for art? Do you have a specific curriculum? Do you wing it? I need some ideas because we have been neglecting it lately.

I saw on a blog recently about collecting art ideas from books, ones that use things you already have at home, and then putting all the ideas into a jar, and picking out one a day or so to do :)

I'm also on the lookout for more art ideas, library books are my main source

Assalamualaykum,
I just randomly take ideas from Deep Space Sparkle Art and Teach Kids Art blogs.
It is a little sporadic, but with so much on our plates we've got to give ourselves some slack somewhere I think!

As salaamu 'alaikum wa RahmatULLAHI wa Barakatuhu Sisters!

May ALLAH make things easy for you and your families, AMEEN.

JazakILLAH Khairin for your ideas - it seems like I get into trouble every year with art. I mostly want hands on activities that won't ruin the whole house in the process, lol. I think that will take a bit of research, InshaALLAH.

You're right about having a full plate already Umm Rashid, especially with so many of them at once. I'm still searching around and InshaALLAH I will share what I find.

Take care,
wa salaam,

Assalaam-u-Alaikum,

Insha'Allah I will be starting a little homeschool group on Saturday (I'm in Saudi so the work week starts on Saturday). I was also looking at some art ideas. My biggest worry is the mess as well. I was thinking of having Tuesdays (I will only be teaching 4 days a week) as art days, so they can take their work home. For painting, I'll be using the kitchen, it's the only place without carpeting, other than the bathrooms. Insha'Allah I will let you know how that one worked out.

Because the kids are 3 and 4 years old, I was thinking of just letting them do their own thing. Give them the material, paper, crayons, paint, brushes (I cringe at the thought of finger painting...oh the potential of mess making), and let them 'express' themselves. So basically I plan on winging it :D!

As salaam alaikum,

I've used some formal curriculum in the past, but we really didn't like it so much so we didn't stick with it.

You know I use out of the house opportunities for arts/crafts frequently. If I see a free/low cost art workshop at the library, art museum, visual arts center, botanical gardesn, I go for it. Less mess and less planning for me, maashaa Allah. They have learned so much from these community resources. I could have never gathered all of those materials, taught myself how to do the technique first, and then been able to try something new with the babies and toddlers hanging around. Don't be afraid to use those great community resources, insha Allah.

Wa 'alaikum as salaam, Sis.

Yes, gathering the materials and then learning the techniques is really the biggest problem - besides the mess, lol.

Community resources are something that I'm definitely looking into, InshaALLAH. We live pretty close to a huge YWCA so that's one of the first places I need to check.

Take care,
wa salaam,
